William Bittner

Of Pitcairn, age 85, died at home on Thursday, July 31, 2025, leaving a legacy of service and craftsmanship

Bill was the beloved husband of Ruth (Koontz) Bittner for 66 years.

He was the loving and cherished father of William (Rebecca) Bittner of VA, Janet R. (Robert) Hubert of North Huntingdon and Shelley D. (Donald) Marangoni of Chambersburg.

Bill was the treasured grandfather of Nicole (Connor) Coughlin; Chelsea Hubert and Courteney Hubert; Alydia (Tyler) Best and Dominic Marangoni.

He was the proud great-grandfather of Henry and Marina Coughlin.

Bill is also survived by his sister, Marlene (late Ernest) Campbell.

Bill was a retired Warehouse Manager for the University of Pittsburgh.

Bill's commitment to his community was unparalleled. As a devoted volunteer fireman for Pitcairn Volunteer Fire Department #2, he not only served with dedication but also led as chief for four years. His foresight of community needs led to the creation of a separate ambulance service for Pitcairn. In 1983, he was instrumental in co-founding the Pitcairn Ambulance Association, a service that benefited countless lives. His leadership as Chief of the Ambulance service for over 40 years is a testament to his unwavering dedication to helping others. For his volunteer efforts, in 1993, Bill was named Citizen of the Year by the Gateway Publications.

Beyond his service, Bill was known for his remarkable woodworking skills. His hands could craft wonders from mere sketches, and his creations were not just items, but treasures filled with love and care. He crafted numerous furniture pieces for family and friends, each telling a story of his talent and thoughtfulness. From a grooming table for Janet to a science table, bar, and craft table for Shelley, and a Grandmother's Clock for Ruth, Bill's work was a blend of art and usefulness, cherished by all who had the pleasure to receive it.

Bill also found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His camper in Mountain Pines, Donegal, was his haven, a place where he could indulge in his love for fishing and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
As we bid farewell to William Bittner, his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he served, the community he improved, and the beautiful creations he left behind.

Friends are welcome on Monday from 2-8pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Turtle Creek / Monroeville Chapel, 1111 Monroeville Ave., Turtle Creek, 412-823-9350 where a Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Bill will be laid to rest in Twin Valley Memorial Park in Delmont.
