Robert J. Kendi

of Monroeville, age 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on May 11, 2022.  He was born in Homestead, PA, the first child of the late Andrew George and Cecilia (Conlin) Kendi.  He grew up in Jeanette, PA, where he attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and graduated in 1953 from Jeanette High School.  (He proudly attended each of his 1953 class reunions in the last 68 years).  In 1957 he received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Penn State and then accepted a position with Blaw Knox Engineering in Pittsburgh.  He remained with Blaw Knox through several mergers and name changes until his retirement in 1998.  Throughout his employment he traveled to job sites in many different states and countries, but his favorite journey was always the trip “home” to his family. At home, he started his day with puzzles from the newspaper and exercised at the local YMCA. He was a “fan” of PSU and the local sports teams. In the summer he gardened and enjoyed canning home-made tomato juice from the crops he had grown.  For many years he nurtured several potted fig trees which bore delicious fruit.  Bob was a long-time member of North American Martyrs Church in Monroeville, PA.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou (Ryan) Kendi and their 3 children: Thomas (Hilary) Kendi and their daughter Cecilia of the Woodlands, TX, Mary Alice Kendi of Pittsburgh, and Margaret Ann Kendi of Findlay Township.  Also surviving is Bob’s sister Alice Kifer (Edward) and their 2 sons Dan & Greg.

Friends welcome Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Turtle Creek / Monroeville Chapel, 1111 Monroeville Ave., Turtle Creek, 412-823-9350. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday 11:00 a.m. at Christ of the Divine Shepherd, St. Bernadette’s in Monroeville.

Robert will be laid to rest at Good Shepherd Cemetery.
