Michael E. Zanic

A resident of Asbury Heights in Mt. Lebanon, formerly of Forest Hills, age 92, died on Monday, December 30, 2024.

Mike was the beloved husband of Katherine N. “Kay” (Kontos) Zanic for 66 years.

He was the loving father of Evan Michael (Dorothy) Zanic of Upper St. Clair and Michael George (Marcie) Zanic of Roslyn Farms.

Mike was the treasured grandfather of Dr. Michael (Lauren) Zanic, D.O.,  Major  Christina Zanic, US Air Force J.A.G., George (Alexandria) Zanic and Nicholas Zanic.

He was proud of his 3 great-grandchildren Xander, Leo and Calista Zanic.

Mike was preceded in death by his dear brother, George Zanic and is survived by George’s sons, George (Lori) and Van (Becky) Zanic

Mike was a 1950 graduate of Edgewood High School. He furthered his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his B.A. in Business Administration in 1954, setting the stage for a successful career in business and management.

In 1955, Mike enlisted in the US Navy, where he served his country with honor aboard the USS Valley Forge. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished 30-year career with the Clark Candy Co. on the North Shore of Pittsburgh. His exceptional skills and work ethic did not go unnoticed, and he was entrusted with significant responsibilities, eventually managing three plants for Beatrice Foods, the owner of Clark Candy Co.

Mike’s professional achievements were matched by his active involvement in various associations and community organizations. He was a lifelong member of the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church (Ypapanti) in East Pittsburgh. His devotion to his faith was evident as he served the church in multiple capacities, including as a cantor and organist. His leadership skills were further utilized as he took on the roles of Board Member, Treasurer, and Secretary for Ypapanti. Moreover, Michael was a founding member of the Y.A.S.O.U. club, which further showcased his commitment to his community and heritage.

Mike was a member of the American Legion in Oakland. His commitment to fraternity and brotherhood was also reflected in his membership with the Masonic Lodge #731 in Duquesne-McKeesport. As a Shriner and member of the Scottish Rite, he demonstrated his deep commitment to charitable works and the well-being of others.

Michael E. Zanic lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a strong sense of community. His legacy of kindness and leadership will continue to be remembered by those who knew him.

Friends are welcome on Thursday from 3-7pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Turtle Creek/Monroeville Chapel, 1111 Monroeville Ave., Turtle Creek, PA 15145, (412) 823-9350 where a Trisagion will be prayed on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

A Funeral Service will take place in the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church (Ypapanti) on Friday at 11 a.m.

Additional viewing will be in Church on Friday from 10 until 11 a.m..

Mike will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Monongahela Cemetery.
