Of Level Green, age 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2023 in the care of Family Hospice at Canterbury Place. Born on August 16, 1927, in Palmer, Fayette County, Mike was a beacon of faith, friendliness, and humor.
Mike graduated in 1944 from North Braddock Scott High School. His life was marked by service to his country as a World War II Navy veteran. Following his military service, Mike embarked on a long career as a bricklayer for U.S. Steel, Edgar Thomson Works in North Braddock.
He was a member of the Trafford American Legion and he was a devout member, volunteer, and officer for St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in East Pittsburgh. His faith was a guiding force in his life.
Personal relationships were at the heart of Mike's life. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Veronica (Lillicotch) Sterchak, for 23 beautiful years. He was a loving father to his daughter, Cynthia "Sid" (David McFadden) Sterchak, and his late sons, Michael and Gary Sterchak. Mike was also a beloved brother to Charles Sterchak of Pitcairn, the late John Sterchak, the late Mary Kattalia, the late George Sterchak, the late twin sisters, Barbara Hess and Beatrice Stagon, stepbrother Tony Badza and stepsister, Irene Haurilesko. He was also a cherished uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. His annual September picnic, hosted at his home, was a testament to his love for family and friends and his ability to bring people together.
Those who knew Mike will remember him as a man full of humor, warmth, and faith. His funny anecdotes and friendly demeanor made him a joy to be around.
Friends are welcome on Tuesday from 2-8pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Avenue at Cable Avenue, East Pittsburgh (412-824-8800) where a Panachida will be prayed on Tuesday at 7pm.
A Divine Liturgy will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church.
Mike will be laid to rest with Military Honors in William Penn Cemetery.
Mike’s family extends grateful thanks to the staff of Family Hospice for the dedicated care they bestowed on Mike, especially Rachel, Sonya, Gina and Hal.
