Manuel N. "Manoli" Stupakis

Of Forest Hills, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024, with his family present, at the venerable age of 94. Born on March 26, 1930, in Chios, Greece, Manoli's life was a vibrant tapestry of adventure, hard work, family, and laughter.

Manoli's journey brought him to America at the age of 19, with a mere $2 to his name and no command of the English language.  He secured employment at the Real Pie Bakery in Pittsburgh's Southside. This first chapter of his American sojourn was brief, as he returned to Greece, only to embark on a seven-year odyssey as a cook upon a cargo ship, visiting over 30 countries.

At 40, Manoli's path led him back to America, where he began a career as a painter with Patrinos Painting Co. He eventually met his beloved Theodora "Dora" (Felouzis) Stupakis, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage, until her death on May 29 of this year.  Together, they raised their children, Katherine Armstrong of Herminie and Nicholas (Angela) Stupakis of Pleasant Hills, instilling in them the values of family unity and integrity. Manoli was proud as he witnessed both Katherine and Nicholas achieve their college educations.

As a proud Papou, Manoli cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Lia, Jack, and Gabriel Armstrong, and Isabella Stupakis.  In Greece, Manoli leaves behind his four sisters, Foula, Maria, Despina, and Androniki, as well as fond memories with his late brother George (late Tessie) Stupakis and late sister Eleni. He was also the treasured uncle of Nick Stupakis and Yanni Sagas.

Manoli's sense of humor was legendary; he was a 'cut up' in the truest sense, always ready with a teasing jest or a clever joke to brighten the day. He was an avid hunter and found great pleasure in the camaraderie of coffee time with his Greek buddies, where stories, advice, and good-natured banter were shared abundantly.

Manoli was a man who came to a new land with nothing but hope and left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the fulfillment of his aspirations.

Friends are welcome Monday from 3-7:30 p.m. at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Ave. at Cable, East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, (412) 824-8800 where a Trisagion will be prayed at 7pm.

Manoli’s funeral service will be in the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church “Ypapanti”, East Pittsburgh, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. There will be additional visitation in Church from 10 to 11 a.m.

Manoli will be laid to rest with Theodora in Monongahela Cemetery.
