Josephine (Papazis) Markantone

Of Murrysville, formerly of Forest Hills, age 91, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Josie was the beloved wife of the late Samuel Markantone for 59 years.

She was the devoted and cherished mother of 4 sons: Luke (Coral) Markantone of Murrysville, Steve (Mindy) Markantone of Murrysville, Michael (Susan) Markantone of DE and Gregory (Anne) Markantone of Latrobe.

Josie was the proud and precious Yia Yia of Carissa (Micah) Larson, Micah (Talia) Markantone, Desiree (Jen) Markantone, Emmanuel (Nicole) Markantone, Daniel (Kate) Jacobs and Melina Markantone.

She was the Great-Yia Yia of Asa, Joshua, Lydia, Noah, Clara, Luisa and Cameron.

Josie was the sister of the late George (surviving spouse Mary) Papazis.

Josie was a retired employee of Hays School Publishing Co. in Wilkinsburg where she was employed in their Accounts Receivable Department.

In 2021, Josie was the recipient of the St. Photios Award from Metropolitan Savas of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh. The St. Photios Award is presented to people who are inspirational parishioners. It is an achievement bestowed upon a dedicated individual such as Josie, who has given so much of her life to her church, her parish, her faith and to Christ. 

Josie was a long time member of the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church “Ypapanti” in East Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and the former Y.A.S.O.U. Josie was a much appreciated and skilled baker of Greek pastries, notably for the Ypapanti Food Festival, but she also thoroughly enjoyed baking and cooking for her family.

Friends are welcome to her visitation on Friday from 10-11 a.m. at The Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church “Ypapanti” where a Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m.

Josie will then be laid to rest in Monongahela Cemetery.
