James Sljva Obituary

A lifelong resident of Braddock and North Braddock, age 80, died on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at UPMC East.

Jim was the beloved husband of Mary (Mitnik) Sljva for 58 years.

He was the loving father of Andrea Schmieder of Scottsville, NY and Amy (Chris) Sljva-Blystone of Penn Twp.

Jim was the cherished grandfather of Zoe Schmieder and Lilly Blystone.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law Albert Mitnik and his sister-in-law Inga Mitnik, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Joseph Sljva, his Mother, Eleanor (Krehely) Sljva and his brother, Joseph Sljva along with his sisters-in-law Pauline (late Joe) Korotko and Anna Mitnik, and his brothers-in-law Andrew (late Millie), George, Michael and Robert (late Barbara) Mitnik.

Jim was a 1961 graduate of Braddock High School and served in the U.S. Army during the early stages of the Vietnam War. He was employed at USSteel Edgar Thomson Works in Braddock before working at Comet News in Braddock for many years.

He loved to hunt, fish, play card games and the lottery and, overall, liked to gamble.

Jim loved dogs, especially Easy the Greyhound. He was hard-working and would do anything for his family. Jim will be greatly missed.

Friends are welcome on Friday from 2-4 & 5-7pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Avenue at Cable Avenue, East Pittsburgh (412-824-8800) where a Blessing Service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Jim will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Monongahela Cemetery.

For the past 6 years Jim has been a resident of LGAR Health and Rehabilitation in Turtle Creek and Jim's family is extremely grateful for the attentive care that was given to him.
