Gus C. “Coke” Halvatzis was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He passed away peacefully on September 15, 2023.
He was born to Chrysostomos and Zenovia Halvatzis on February 10, 1938, in East Pittsburgh, PA. He was deeply devoted to his faith and grew up an altar boy in the Greek Orthodox Church. Gus graduated from East Pittsburgh High School in 1955 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts at California State College of Pennsylvania. Following college, Gus was drafted into the US Army in 1961 where he did basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC and was then stationed in Korea and Pittsburgh. Once he joined the workforce, he was a dedicated employee of Siemens-Westinghouse for over 40 years. During that time, Gus married the love of his life of nearly 40 years, Holly Halvatzis. From PA, Gus and Holly moved to Houston, TX, then Oviedo, FL and Chuluota, FL, until they happily retired to The Villages, FL in 2004. Gus loved his family, the game of golf, and Holly’s delicious Greek food – which she learned to cook just for him!
Gus is preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Halvatzis, sister Aspasia “Pat” Papakostos, and his wife Holly Halvatzis. He is survived by his sons Chris Levine (wife, Amanda) and Dean Halvatzis (wife, Susan); granddaughters Jenna and Cate Levine and grandsons Andrew and Teddy Halvatzis; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great great-nieces and nephews.
A viewing is planned for Friday, October 6, 2023, from 4-6pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home and Crematory 700 Linden Ave. East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, (412-824-8800). Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 beginning at 11am at “Ypapanti”, The Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, 1672 Electric Ave. East Pittsburgh, PA 15112. Additional viewing in church ½ hour prior to service start time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “Ypapanti”, The Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church.
Coke will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Monongahela Cemetery in North Braddock.
