Gerald "Bob" R. Wentroble

Of Level Green died on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 79

Bob was born to parents Joe and Vera (Schultz) Wentroble and grew up in the “projects” of Turtle Creek with his siblings: Vera (Babeo), Gladys (Hubbs), William, Joseph and Joyce, all of whom preceded him in death.

Bob was proud to be from Turtle Creek, even after living in Level Green for 60 years, if asked where he was from, his reply would be “Turtle Creek”

Bob was a graduate of Turtle Creek High School, class of 63.  After graduating he worked at Westinghouse as a welder, becoming union president and eventually a skilled contract negotiator for the IUE.  He traveled all over the world from Japan to the Czech Republic negotiating fair contracts for union workers.

Bob married the love of his life, Carol (McClelland) in 1964. This past June they celebrated their 60th anniversary, he is survived by Carol and their three sons, Robert, Dan (Jennifer) and Terry, all currently of Level Green.

Bob is also survived by the lights of his life, his grandchildren Luke and Olivia. When Luke and Olivia were young, he watched them every Tuesday and never missed a sporting event or dance recital.  There was nothing Bob wouldn’t do for his grandkids, even dressing up once as Darth Vader for a birthday party at Sea Base.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and always looked forward to his annual trips for the opening day of trout season to his camp (My Three Sons) in Kane, PA, first with his friends, later with his sons and their friends and more recently with his grandson, Luke, and his friends.  After retiring, Bob and Carol would spend winters in Florida and summers in Kane.

Bob’s love for sports was unparallel, as a Pittsburgh sports fan, he enjoyed watching and cheering on the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers, but the team that captured his heart was the University of Notre Dame football team.  Bob started attending ND games in South Bend, IN, at a young age.  He was a “subway alumni”, season ticket holder and often attended every home game in a season, hosting tailgates where he was knows as the “mayor” of the tailgate and making lifelong friends.

Bob also traveled extensively to away games, from the shores of Ireland to the Islands of Hawaii and all over the country.  In later years, when visiting South Bend, you would find Bob at the epic pregames at the “corner house” and watching the Irish play from the Downes Club.

Bob passed his love for Notre Dame onto his family, and was thrilled to attend his granddaughter, Olivia’s, graduation from the University of Notre Dame in May 2022.  It was because of her grandfather that Olivia aspired to attend, and was able to graduate, from the prestigious university.  For that, she will be eternally grateful to him.

Bob was a dear uncle to Tim and Kimberly Wentroble, Johhny and Billy Hubbs, and Jeff Wentroble, as well as a friend to many, keeping in touch with many of the friends he grew up with and the ones he met along the way, until the very end.

Bob will be missed by many for his keen sense of humor, his stories around the campfire and his love for family, friends and Notre Dame… GO IRISH!!!

Honoring Bob’s wishes, there was no visitation or service.

Donations can be made, in Bob’s name, to one of the many charities he supported, including: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
