Fotiene (Angelos) Sklavos

Fotiene (Angelos) Sklavos of Pasadena, MD, formerly of Forest Hills, age 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 1, 2025.  Fotiene’s life was marked by her deep devotion to her family, her unwavering faith, her kind smile and her infectious laugh.

Fotiene was the beloved wife of the late George Sklavos for 45 years and she was preceded in death by her sister, Evangeline Angelos and her brother, Louis (Margaret) Angelos. She is survived by her children, Peter (Marty) Sklavos of Darnestown, MD, Maria (Andy) Servinsky of Pasadena, MD and Ernest Sklavos of Pittsburgh; her adored grandchildren, Nia and Evan Sklavos and Gia and Lucas Servinsky; her dear friend and sister-in-law Anna Dudek (Dan) of Canonsburg and many cherished nieces, nephews and Godchildren, who loved her dearly.

Born and raised in Weirton, WV, Fotiene graduated from Weir High in 1953 before pursuing a calling to further serve her faith as a devout Greek Orthodox Cristian. She attended St. Basil Academy in Garrison, NY, where she trained as a Greek School teacher, choir director and parish secretary.  Fotiene served as choir director and Greek School teacher, and in multiple other capacities at the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church (Ypapanti) in East Pittsburgh and then also back to her home parish All Saints Greek Orthodox Church (Weirton, WV).  Fotiene went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the College of Steubenville and taught third and fourth grade at Alikanna and Steubenville Elementary in Ohio.  In 1972 Fotiene married George Sklavos and dedicated herself to her family.  She was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Choir Federation, the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and the Ypapanti Church Choir.  Fotiene was also well known for baking delicious desserts.  She led the Kalithopita baking in preparation for the annual Ypapanti Greek Orthodox Food Festival for many decades and often made her signature Texas Sheet Cake and chocolate covered pretzels for friends and family.  Later in life Fotiene returned to teaching working in various daycare programs.  Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.

Friends are welcome on Friday from 3-7 p.m. at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Ave. at Cable, East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, (412) 824-8800 where a Trisagion will be prayed on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The Funeral Service will be in Ypapanti on Saturday at 11 a.m. with an additional viewing in church from 10-11 a.m.  Fotiene will be laid to rest in Monongahela Cemetery.
