Obituary of Dennis J. “Denny” Neafsy

Of Churchill, formerly East Pittsburgh and Level Green, died on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Denny was the loving husband of Cheryl (Halloran) Neafsy for 45 years.

He was the cherished father of Courtney Neafsy and Katie (Derek Jones) Neafsy.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sarah ‘Sadie’ (Murray) Neafsy, his sister, Mary Kay (late Jack) Cassidy and his brother, John ‘Jackie’ Neafsy who died during childhood.

Denny also was preceded in death by Cheryl’s parents who Denny referred to as “Sparky’ and “Al” Halloran.

Denny is also survived by the Halloran siblings, many special nieces, nephews and cousins, and his special pet dog, ‘Aussie Boy’.

 A proud 1964 graduate of East Pittsburgh High School, Denny's love for sports was evident as he played football, baseball, and basketball for the Shamrocks. After graduation, Denny served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.
 Denny's professional journey was as diverse as it was fulfilling, with his early years spent at the heart of industry at Mesta Machine, US Steel's Homestead Works, and Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh. His entrepreneurial spirit was displayed brightly as he ventured into the hospitality industry, establishing three businesses: The Hollywood Show Bar, Jack and Denny's Lounge in East Pittsburgh, and The Shamrock in North Braddock. Denny's friendly demeanor made these establishments popular local haunts where many gathered for good times and great memories.

In the latter part of his career, Denny became a bus driver for the Woodland Hills School District. He took great pride in driving the football team’s bus during their championship years.

Perhaps Denny's most significant and personal triumph was his 27 years of sobriety. An active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he dedicated himself to mentoring others battling the addiction of alcohol. Denny's passion for helping others achieve sobriety was a testament to his generous spirit and his belief in second chances.

Beyond his work and contributions to the community, Denny was an avid sportsman, playing many seasons of softball and sponsoring local teams. He gave meticulous attention to his yard work in Level Green and particular care to his prized Corvette. He was a die-hard Notre Dame fan and found relaxation on his deck with a good cigar while listening to the Oldies. Denny found excitement at the casino, where he played Black Jack and placed the occasional sports wager.

Those who knew Denny will remember him as funny, friendly, and passionate. As we bid farewell to Denny, we are reminded of the joy he brought into the world and the difference one person can make through genuine kindness and an open heart.

Friends are welcome on Tuesday from 11a.m. to 1p.m. at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Ave. at Cable, East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, (412) 824-8800 where a Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m.

Denny will be laid to rest in Braddock Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors.
