Anthony Carl Catalano died on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital, with his family at his side. Carl was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He graduated from Tenney High School in Methuen, Massachusetts and Marygrove College in Detroit, where he met his wife Rita. In June 2023, Carl and Rita celebrated 50 years of a joyful, blessed marriage. Dedication to his family was Carl’s life’s purpose. He was an always loving and patient husband, an adoring father to Jennifer, an over-the-moon Nannu to his grandson William, and a devoted brother to his sister Rosann. Carl was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Mary (Caruso) Catalano; his grandparents Sebastiano and Giuseppina (Molon) Caruso and Ignazio and Rosa (Cataudella) Catalano; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Edward and Ann Poprocky, and other members of the Catalano, Caruso, and Poprocky families. Carl is survived by his wife Rita (Poprocky) Catalano, his daughter Jennifer (Kevin) Filak, his grandson William Filak, his sister Rosann Catalano (Julie Wojtisek), his Auntie Jessie (Caruso) Diminico, his sisters- and brothers-in-law Kathy Jackson, Theresa Poprocky, Monica (Pat) D’Abruzzo, Edward (Victoria) Poprocky, and Anne (Paul) Troy, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. In his work life, Carl was a computer information systems manager at Brown University, Catholic Knights of Saint George, G.C. Murphy Company, and Westmoreland County. Carl enjoyed reading and all forms of music from rock to opera. He described himself as a “homebody” whose happiest times were spent with his family—enjoying and preparing family dinners, including his famous meatloaf, pork chops, and pasta with breadcrumbs; watching movies; building Legos with William; and so many other everyday precious moments that Carl made special by his warmth, sense of humor, and unconditional love. He lighted the lives of so many, and he will be a guiding light for his family forever.
Friends and family are welcome to a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 11, 2023, in St. John Fisher Church, of St Joseph the Worker Parish at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Penn Forest Cemetery.
