John is survived by his daughter, Barbara Lynn Jurack (Bernard) of Espyville, and a granddaughter, Lee Ann Johnston, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Hempel Hersak, son Carl Hersak and his sisters Mary Kolesar, Anna Hersak and Elizabeth Demnisky. John was the first American born child of Gyorgy and Barbala Hercsak who immigrated in 1910 from Lehocz, Ukraine. John was born Aug. 28, 1911 in the small patch town of Hope, Fayette County. Being orphaned at a young age, he and his youngest sister were taken in and raised by an uncle and aunt, Janos and Mary Kokayko in East Pittsburgh. John graduated from East Pittsburgh High School in 1931 and, later, the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. After graduation, he worked for Gordon's Drug Store in Duquesne, and then, in 1939, opened his own John's Leader Drug in Turtle Creek. He and his nephew, John W. Sapida, worked together until his store was destroyed by fire in 1973. At that point, John went into semi-retirement, while his nephew continued the family business. Enjoying his retirement, John became a full-time golfer, spending much of his last 40 years on many golf courses around Espyville, Pa. In declining health, John lived his last 5 years in St. Paul Nursing Home in Greenville, Pa. where he was wonderfully cared for by the most professional and loving staff imaginable.
